Art Implementation
Since our game is stylized we had to put a lot of care into how everything looked. I've already made a blog post as too how I made stylized assets for the game (See my How To on making stylized assets). We wanted the game to look cartoonish but also creepy, but it's a hard combination to pull off. Bright cheery colors don't really make for the best unsettling atmosphere after all.
So we had to find a way to use both lighting and post processing effects to add some extra mood to the game. Some of the things we did to implement art in a stylized ways are clear throughout the game. For example, the fog being a normal gray fog wouldn't fit well with the rest of our game, so we instead decided to saturate it with a bit of blue. The bluer fog looks more like stylized shading than the plain gray. It also makes the overall atmosphere colder and unnerving. We've also done a second pass on all the colors to make sure they weren't as saturated and look more dusty. This also helps with getting that cold atmosphere since it makes the blue more pronounced.
However it is still important that the art does remain somewhat cartoonish. Since it contrasts the suspense of the game so directly it's slightly more unnerving. But it also serves to add some relief to the game.
