Concept Art

Hello everyone!

For my first dev blog post, I thought I'd give you a peek into the concept art I made while we were still solidifying the game.

Directly after we were told the theme of the project was "break the rules", our team began brainstorming ideas for our game. Since urban exploration is a very direct way to tie the story to breaking rules, as it involves trespassing/breaking and entering, several of us thought it might be fun to theme our game around it and flesh it out from there. While we discussed ideas, I made some very rough sketches of a potential main character and an interaction they might have in the environment.

One of the earliest sketches of our player character. This was drawn before our team decided the game would take place specifically in an abandoned hotel.
The main character searching for their brother was one of the earlier decisions we made relating to the plot. Once we decided we wanted voice acting in our game, I realized I could contribute my own voice, and that character became a woman- Fran, to be exact. The idea for the game was beginning to come together into a real story!

My concept art for Fran. The game is in first person, so the player doesn't know what she looks like, but I feel like this drawing gave me some good insight into who she is.
When we were designing the hotel room for our very first build, Tyler Gromow made several sketches of different layout options.

Using these as reference, I drew a mockup of what a room could potentially look like in the build from the player's point of view...

... and some ideas for props in the room that weren't visible from that angle.

As for what I've been working on this week, there's been some lore in the making, as well as some art for the walls of the old Searchlight Hotel. Here's a sneak peek at the latter!

I realized after painting this that the light source really should have been coming from the moon. Oh, well.

This ended up reminding me a little of Minecraft. Not that that's a bad thing.

I wonder who these sinister folks could be.

This one was based on a photo I took a few years ago of a lovely sunrise. I may add in some brushstrokes to the sky to make it more painterly.

I hope you've enjoyed this look into some of the art made for the game!

Keep Seeking.
